Painting landscapes has always posed a different challenge to me than painting portraits. The focus to me has always been on color and paint application when it comes to landscapes. With portraits, I try to capture the essence of the subject as well as the skin tones and subtle features of their face.
This last Spring, I got to visit Paso Robles' plein air landscape festival where artists from all over exhibited their art. There was also a wet canvas auction where all landscapes had been recently painted en plein air from various location along the Central Coast of California.
One of my favorite exhibits was the woodblock print maker who rolled his paper onto his carving using a steam roller! Each print was about 3'x3'.
I got to meet some great artists and see so much amazing work. I'll be sure to go back next year!
